Sierra Stages and The Center for the Arts are joining forces to present the Tony Award-winning musical —“Into the Woods”—by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, for three weekends only from May 6 through May 23. This production of “Into the Woods” is directed by Robert Rossman, with musical director Ken Getz, and features an ensemble cast of 21 local actors and a 15-piece theatre orchestra.

Inspired by the timeless tales of the Brothers Grimm, “Into the Woods” tells the story of a Baker and his Wife who journey into the Woods on a quest to lift a witch’s curse. On the way, they cross paths with Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), Rapunzel, Cinderella and other fairy tale characters. They each pursue individual wishes until their stories become entangled in unexpected ways – revealing what happens after “happily ever after.” Stephen Sondheim, who turned 80 years old in March, has written a wickedly witty score which weaves a magical spell with such enchanting gems as Children Will Listen, Giants In The Sky and No One Is Alone.

Into the Woods” is one of Sondheim’s most accessible works, appealing to audiences young (age 12 and above) and old. “Into the Woods” swept the Tony Awards in 1988, winning 10 categories, including Best Musical. Time Magazine described it as “the best show yet from the most creative mind in the musical theater today.” Among the original Broadway cast was Bernadette Peters, who starred as the Witch; her iconic performance in this role was captured in a 1991 PBS Great Performances broadcast recording of the show. The original Broadway production ran for 764 performances, Sondheim’s second-longest running show (behind A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum). It was revived on Broadway in 2002 (starring Vanessa Williams as the Witch) for 279 more performances, and is produced by hundreds of community theaters and schools each year.

Heading the ensemble cast of “Into the Woods” are Dawn Simmons-Altenbach as Cinderella, Robert Meyer and Kim Wellman as the Baker and the Baker’s Wife, Grace Fae as the Witch, Corinne Gelfan as Jack’s Mother, Lyra Dominguez as Rapunzel, Stephen Wellman as the Narrator, Richard Joplin as the Mysterious Man, JR Lewis as the Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince and Dylan Hoy-Bianchi as Rapunzel’s Prince.  Little Red Riding Hood will be played by Kathleen Ashton and Jack will be played at alternating performances by Harris Banneck and Toby Medlyn. Rounding out the cast are Nancy Haffey, Rebekah Martino and Haley Dean as Cinderella’s Stepmother and Stepsisters , Shanna Sullivan as Cinderella’s Mother/Granny/Giant, Jordan Thomas-Rose as the Steward, and Rik Augustine as Cinderella’s Father, with cameo appearances by Rachel Wellman as Snow White and Carli Siegfried as Sleeping Beauty.

The design and technical staff includes Mr. Rossman (Set Design), Pamela Hodges (Scenic Artist), Kay Drake (Costumes), Erin Brighting (Lighting Design), Greg Cameron (Sound Design), Chaney Janssen (Stage Manager), Thomas Taylor (Technical Director), and Rosemary Stoenner (Witch and Wolf Design).

Sierra Stages is a non-profit community theatre which last year presented the revue Side by Side by Sondheim at the Off Center Stage (the small theatre at the Center for the Arts) and a series of three musicals staged in a concert setting at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center. Side by Side by Sondheim and the three musicals--The Sound of Music, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and She Loves Me – were enthusiastically received by audiences and played to virtually sold-out houses.
