LiteratureAlive! is excited to present Coleman Barks reading his inspired translations of the ecstatic poems of Jelaluddin Rumi, a thirteenth-century Sufi mystic whose poetry is filled with humor, wisdom, and spiritual depth. Barks reading will be accompanied by renowned musicians Barry & Shelley Phillips. Coleman Barks is the primary conduit for bringing Rumi's mystical consciousness into English. He has translated and published more than fifteen collections of Rumi's poems, including The Illuminated Rumi and The Essential Rumi. A poet in his own right and teacher of contemporary American poetry, Coleman Barks recently retired from the University of Georgia, Athens. His work was featured in "Love's Confusing Joy," an hour-long program with Bill Moyers and he is a featured poet and translator in Moyer’s poetry special, “Fooling with Words.”
